こんにちは、ちか先生です。
Konnichiwa, it's Chika Sensei.

Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT N3 course!
The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

かぜがちなので、もう寝ます。

*かぜがちなので、もうねます。

[My correction]

かぜがちなので、もう寝ます。
→かぜ気味(ぎみ)なので、もう寝ます。
I feel like I have a cold, so I’m going to bed now.

〜がち(tends to) describes something that has happened many times. 気味(feels like) describes a current condition.

If you would like to say that your current condition might be cold, you should use 気味.

e.g.
最近(さいきん)運動(うんどう)をあまりしてないので、今(いま)、太(ふと)り気味だ。
I haven't been exercising much lately, so now I'm gaining weight.

太り気味=My current condition

息子(むすこ)は体(からだ)が弱(よわ)くて、学校(がっこう)を休(やす)みがちです。
My son has a weak condition and tends to miss school.

休みがち=It happens many times

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

会社まで電車に行きます。

*かいしゃまででんしゃにいきます。

[My correction]

会社まで電車に行きます。
→会社まで電車で行きます。
I take the train to the office.
(Lit; I go to the office by train.)

で is used to specify the means by which something is done.

[mean]で
電車で

In your sentence, 電車で means "by train" and the particle で shows that this is the means you selected to carry out the activity of commuting.

e.g.
タクシーで駅(えき)に行(い)きましょう。
Let's take a taxi to the station.

新幹線(しんかんせん)で大阪(おおさか)に出張(しゅっちょう)します。
I will go on a business trip to Osaka by Shinkansen.

駐車場(ちゅうしゃじょう)がないので、車(くるま)で来(こ)ないでください。
Please do not come by car as there is no parking.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

この洗濯機は、丈夫で壊れづらいです。

*このせんたくきは、じょうぶでこわれづらいです。

[My correction]

この洗濯機は、丈夫で壊れづらいです。
→この洗濯機は、丈夫で壊れにくいです。
This washing machine is durable and unbreakable.

〜にくい means something difficult for anyone to do or achieve.
Meanwhile, 〜づらい implies that something is distressful to do for only you, not anyone else.

The fact that the washing machine does not break down easily is part of the product information. It has nothing to do with personal intentions, so 壊れにくい should be used, not 壊れづらい.

e.g.
・先生(せんせい)の説明(せつめい)はわかりにくいです。
The teacher's explanations are difficult to understand.
(Understanding is hard to achieve.)

・先生の説明はわかりづらいです。
I'm having trouble understanding the teacher's explanations.
(Understanding is distressful.)

・この字(じ)は読(よ)みにくいです。
This is hard to read.
(Reading is hard to achieve.)

・この字は読みづらいです。
This handwriting is so bad it's making my eyes hurt.
(Reading is distressful.)

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

[Student's sentence]

私のたんじょうびに母がかばんをあげました。

*わたしのたんじょうびにははがかばんをあげました。

[My correction]

私のたんじょうびに母がかばんをあげました。
→私のたんじょうびに母がかばんをくれました。
My mother gave me a bag for my birthday.

Japanese has two verbs for giving. When a thing moves toward "I", we use くれる. When a thing moves away from "I", we use あげる.
In your sentence, the bag moved toward you( "I" in the sentence), you should use くれる.

e.g.
私は父(ちち)のたんじょうびに時計(とけい)をあげました。
I gave my father a watch for his birthday.

ねこにえさをあげました。
I fed the cat.

この花(はな)は彼氏(かれし)が私にくれました。
My boyfriend gave me these flowers.

むすめが手紙(てがみ)をくれました。
My daughter gave me a letter.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

先生に本を借りてもらいました。

*せんせいにほんをかりてもらいました。

[My correction]

先生に本を借りてもらいました。
→先生に本を貸(か)してもらいました。
My teacher lent me a book.
(Lit; I asked my teacher to lend me a book.)

貸して(lend)+もらう(I receive the action, I ask someone to do)
=借りる borrow

先生に本を貸してもらいました。
(I asked my teacher to lend me a book)
=先生に本を借りました。
I borrowed a book from my teacher.

借りて(borrow) +もらう(I receive the action, I ask someone to do)
=貸す lend

先生に本を借りてもらいました。
(I asked my teacher to borrow me a book.)
=先生に本を貸しました。
I lent a book to my teacher.

The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

台風でまどがこわれました。

*たいふうでまどがこわれました。

[My correction]

台風でまどがこわれました。
→台風でまどがわれました。
A window was broken by the typhoon.

こわれる(壊れる) is used when a machine or functional object breaks or loses its function.
われる(割れる) is used when a force is applied to a hard object and it breaks into multiple parts. Especially, for fragile things.

You should use われる in this sentence because the window is a fragile item and something hit it in the typhoon and split it into several pieces.

e.g.
お皿(さら)を洗(あら)っているとき、手(て)がすべってわれました。
While washing dishes, my hand slipped and I broke a plate.

たまごを落(お)として、われてしまいました。
I dropped eggs and they got broken.

れいぞうこがこわれたので、冷(つめ)たいジュースが飲(の)めません。
I can't drink cold juice because the refrigerator is broken.

ねこがいたずらして、パソコンがこわれた。
My cat touched my computer and broke it.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

[Student's sentence]

京都旅行は楽しかった。また行ってみたい。

*きょうとりょこうはたのしかった。またいってみたい

[My correction]

京都旅行は楽しかった。また行ってみたい。
→京都旅行は楽しかった。また行きたい。
The Kyoto trip was fun. I would like to go back.

〜てみる is used about things you have not experienced before.
You already went to Kyoto, so I can't say 行ってみたい.
If you want to go to Kyoto again, say また行きたい.

e.g.
富士山(ふじさん)に行(い)ったことはあるけど、登(のぼ)ったことはない。一度登ってみたい。
I have been to Mt. Fuji but never climbed it. I want to climb it once.

納豆(なっとう)はどんな味(あじ)なのか、食(た)べてみたい。
I want to try natto to see what it tastes like.

去年(きょねん)富士山に登ったが、今年(ことし)もまた登りたい。
I climbed Mt. Fuji last year and want to do it again this year.

あそこのクロワッサンは本当(ほんとう)においしかった。また食べたい。
The croissant there was really good. I want to eat it again.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

天気予報によると、明日は雨が降るらしい。

*てんきよほうによると、あしたはあめがふるらしい。

[My correction]

天気予報によると、明日は雨が降るらしい。
→天気予報によると、明日は雨が降るそうだ。
According to the weather report, it will rain tomorrow.

らしい is not only used for things you read or heard about, it also includes one's own thoughts and ideas.
You know from the weather report that it will rain tomorrow; you did not make the decision on your own.
So you should use そうだ for hearsay.

e.g.
父(ちち)の話(はなし)では、この公園(こうえん)は昔(むかし)、小学校(しょうがっこう)だったそうだ。
According to my father, this park used to be an elementary school.

あのラーメン屋はおいしいらしい。いつも人が並んでいるし、何人かにおすすめされたし。
That ramen shop seems to be good. There are always people lined up, and several people have recommended it to me.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

電話番号は書かないでもいいですよ。

*でんわばんごうはかかないでもいいですよ。

電話番号は書かないでもいいですよ。
→電話番号は書かなくてもいいですよ。
You don't have to write your phone number.

◎〜なくてもいい "don't have to"
×〜ないでもいい

Verb nai-formい+くてもいい
書かな|い
書かな|くてもいい

e.g.
嫌(きら)いなら、食(た)べなくてもいいですよ。
You don't have to eat it if you don't like it.

明日(あした)は会社(かいしゃ)に来(こ)なくてもいいです。

The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

A: 明日、7時に学校に来てください。
B: わかります。

*A: あした、しちじにがっこうにきてください。

[My correction]

A: 明日、7時に学校に来てください。
B: わかります。
→B: わかりました。

A: Come to school tomorrow at 7:00.
B: I got it./ I understand.

You say わかりました when you understand the explanation or instruction that the other person has just given to you. You just learned something now.

If you say わかります in your sentence, it means "I already know that long ago."

You should say わかりました because you didn't know that you had to come to school tomorrow at 7:00 unless A told you.

e.g.
A: 先生(せんせい)、テストはいつですか。
B: 来週(らいしゅう)の月曜日(げつようび)ですよ。
A: そうですか、わかりました。
A: Sensei, when is the test?
B: Next Monday.
A: Okay, I got it.

A: この問題(もんだい)はわかりますか。
B: はい、わかります。
A: Do you understand this question?
B: Yes, I do.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊
