むかしむかし、 あるところに、 おじいさんと おばあさんが すんで いました。
昔々、 あるところに、 おじいさんと おばあさんが 住んで いました。
Long, long ago, in a certain place, an old man and an old woman were living.
おじいさんは やまへ しばかりに、 おばあさんは かわへ せんたくに いきました。
おじいさんは 山へ 柴刈りに、 おばあさんは 川へ 洗濯に 行きました。
The old man headed to the mountains to gather firewood, the old women went to the river to do laundry.
おばあさんが かわで せんたくを していると、 ドンブラコ、 ドンブラコと、 おおきな ももが ながれて きました。
おばあさんが 川で 洗濯を していると、 ドンブラコ、 ドンブラコと、 大きな 桃が 流れて 来ました。
The old woman was at the river doing laundry, when with a splash a big peach came floating by.
「おや、 これは よいおみやげが できたわ」
「おや、 これは よいお土産が できたわ」- (Voice of the book narrator.)
"Oh my! This is an excellent present to have been able to receive, truely amazing!"
おばあさんは おおきな ももを ひろいあげて、 いえに もちかえりました。
おばあさんは 大きな 桃を 拾い上げて、 家に 持ち帰りました。
The old woman carried the big peach back to the house.
そして、 おじいさんと おばあさんが ももを たべようと
そして、 おじいさんと おばあさんが 桃を 食べようと
Then the old man and old women tried to eat the peach,
ももを きってみると、 なんと、 なかから げんきの よい おとこの あかちゃんが とびだして きたのです。
桃を 切って見ると、 何と、 中から 元気の よい 男の 赤ちゃんが 飛び出して 来たのです。
they tried to cut the peach, and what should suddenly come and appear from inside, a good, healthy male baby.
「これは きっと、 かみさまが くださったに ちがいない」
「これは きっと、 神様が くださったに 違いない」- (Voice of the book narrator.)
"This is undoubtedly given by the gods, make no mistake."
こどもの いなかった おじいさんと おばあさんは、 おおよろこびです。
子供の いなかった おじいさんと おばあさんは、 大喜びです。
This was a great pleasure as the old man and old woman did not have a child.
ももから うまれた おとこのこを、 おじいさんと おばあさんは ももたろうと なづけました。
桃から 生まれた 男の子を、 おじいさんと おばあさんは 桃太郎と 名付けました。
The boy that was born from the peach, the old man and old woman named Momotarou.
ももたろうは スクスク そだって、 やがて つよい おとこのこに なりました。
桃太郎は スクスク 育って、 やがて 強い 男の子に なりました。
Momotarou grew quickly, and soon became a strong boy.
そして あるひ、 ももたろうが いいました。
そして ある日、 桃太郎が 言いました。
Then one day, Momotarou said:
「ぼく、 おにがしまへ いって、 わるい おにを たいじ します」
「僕、 鬼が島へ 行って、 悪い 鬼を 退治 します」
"I will go to Demon Island, and eradicate bad demons."
そして、 おばあさんに きびだんごを つくって もらうと、 おにがしまへ でかけました。
そして、 おばあさんに 吉備団子を 作って もらうと、 鬼が島へ 出かけました。
Then Momotarou received the sweet dumplings the old woman had made and departed for Demon Island.
たびの とちゅうで、 イヌに であいました。
旅の 途中で、 犬に 出会いました。
While still travelling Momotarou met a dog.
「ももたろうさん、 どこへ いくのですか？」
「桃太郎さん、 どこへ 行くのですか？」- (Voice of the dog.)
"Momotarou, where are you going?"
「おにがしまへ、 おに たいじに いくんだ」- (Should there be an を proceeding おに?)
「鬼が島へ、 鬼 退治に 行くんだ」- (Voice of Momotarou)
"I go to Demon Island to eradicate demons."
「それでは、 おこしに つけた きびだんごを １つ くださいな。 おともしますよ」
「それでは、 お腰に 付けた 吉備団子を １つ くださいな。 お供しますよ」- (Voice of the dog.)
"Well then, please give me 1 sweet dumpling that hangs attached to your waist. I will be your companion."
イヌは きびだんごを もらい、 ももたろうの おともに なりました。
犬は 吉備団子を もらい、 桃太郎の お供に なりました。
The dog received a sweet dumpling and became Momotarou's companion.
そして、 こんどは サルに であいました。
そして、 今度は サルに 出会いました。
Then, in turn Momotarou met a monkey.
「ももたろうさん、 どこへ いくのですか？」
「桃太郎さん、 どこへ 行くのですか？」- (Voice of the monkey.)
"Momotarou, where are you going?"
「おにがしまへ、 おに たいじに いくんだ」
「鬼が島へ、 鬼 退治に 行くんだ」- (Voice of Momotarou.)

Then, in turn Momotarou met a Japanese pheasant.
「ももたろうさん、 どこへ いくのですか？」
「桃太郎さん、 どこへ 行くのですか？」- (Voice of the Japanese Pheasant.)
"Momotarou, where are you going?"
「おにがしまへ、 おに たいじに いくんだ」
「鬼が島へ、 鬼 退治に 行くんだ」- (Voice of Momotarou.)
"I go to Demon Island to eradicate demons."
「それでは、 おこしに つけた きびだんごを １つ くださいな。 おともしますよ」
「それでは、 お腰に 付けた 吉備団子を １つ くださいな。 お供しますよ」- (Voice of the Japanese Pheasant.)
"Well then, please give me 1 sweet dumpling that hangs attached to your waist. I will be your companion."
こうして、 イヌ、 サル、 キジの なかまを てにいれた ももたろうは、 ついに おにがしまへ やってきました。
こうして、 イヌ、 サル、 キジの 仲間を 手に入れた 桃太郎は、 ついに 鬼が島へ やって来ました。
Thus in the company of the dog, the monkey and the pheasant that Momotarou had procured, at last they arrived at Demon Island.
おにがしまでは、 おにたちが ちかくの むらから ぬすんだ たからものや ごちそうを ならべて、 さかもりの まっさいちゅうです。
鬼が島では、 鬼たちが 近くの 村から 盗んだ 宝物や ご馳走を 並べて、 酒盛りの 真っ最中です。
At Demon Island, demons stole from a near by village things such as treasure and treats arranged in lines, and were now in the middle of merrymaking.
「みんな、 ぬかるなよ。 それ、 かかれ！」
「みんな、 ぬかるなよ。 それ、 抜れ！」- (Voice of Momotarou.)
"Everyone, NOT YET TRANSLATED CLASSIC JAPANESE"
イヌは おにの おしりに かみつき、
犬は 鬼の お尻に かみつき、
The dog bit the demons bottoms,
サルは おにの せなかを ひっかき、
サルは 鬼の 背中を ひっかき、
the monkey scartched the demons backs,
キジは くちばしで おにの めを つつきました。
キジは くちばしで 鬼の 目を つつきました。
the pheasant pecked the eyes of the demons with it's beak.
そして、 ももたろうも、 かたなを ふりまわして おおあばれです。
ぞして、 桃太郎も、 刀を 振り回して 大暴れです。
Then Momotarou also wielded his sword and went on a rampage.
あまりにも つよい ももたろうたちに、 とうとう おにの おやぶんが、
あまりにも 強い 桃太郎たちに、 とうとう 鬼の おやぶんが、
But to Momotarou's excessive strength the Chief Demon said:
「まいった、 まいった。 こうさんだ、 たすけてくれぇ」
「まいった、 まいった。 降参だ、 たすけてくれぇ」- (Voice of Chief Demon.)
"I'm defeated, I'm defeated. I surrender, please save me."
と、 てをついて あやまりました。
と、 手をついて 謝りました。
And the Chief Demon placed both hands on the ground and begged forgiveness.
ももたろうと イヌと サルと キジは、 おにから とりあげた たからものを くるまに つんで、 げんきよく いえに かえりました。
桃太郎と 犬と サルと キジは、 鬼から 取り上げた 宝物を 車に 積んで、 元気よく 家に 帰りました。
Momotarou, the dog, the monkey and the pheasant, piled the confiscated treasure from the demons in to a vehicle, and cheerfully returned home.
おじいさんと おばあさんは、 ももたろうの ぶじな すがたを みて おおよろこびです。
おじいさんと おばあさんは、 桃太郎の 無事な 姿を 見て 大喜びです。
The old man and the old woman saw that Momotarou appeared safe and they were joyful.
そして３にんは、 たからものの おかげで しあわせに くらしましたとさ。
そして３にんは、 宝物の おかげで 幸せに くらしましたとさ。
The 3 people were able to live in good fortune owing to the treasure, so I heard.
