Konnichiwa, it's Chika Sensei.
Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT N5 course!
The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?
[Student's sentence]
私のたんじょうびに母がかばんをあげました。
*わたしのたんじょうびにははがかばんをあげました。
[My correction]
私のたんじょうびに母がかばんをあげました。
→私のたんじょうびに母がかばんをくれました。
My mother gave me a bag for my birthday.
Japanese has two verbs for giving. When a thing moves toward "I", we use くれる. When a thing moves away from "I", we use あげる.
In your sentence, the bag moved toward you( "I" in the sentence), you should use くれる.
e.g.
私は父(ちち)のたんじょうびに時計(とけい)をあげました。
I gave my father a watch for his birthday.
ねこにえさをあげました。
I fed the cat.
この花(はな)は彼氏(かれし)が私にくれました。
My boyfriend gave me these flowers.
むすめが手紙(てがみ)をくれました。
My daughter gave me a letter.
