こんにちは、ちか先生です。
Konnichiwa, it's Chika Sensei.

Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT N3 course!
The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

天気予報によると、明日は雨が降るらしい。

*てんきよほうによると、あしたはあめがふるらしい。

[My correction]

天気予報によると、明日は雨が降るらしい。
→天気予報によると、明日は雨が降るそうだ。
According to the weather report, it will rain tomorrow.

らしい is not only used for things you read or heard about, it also includes one's own thoughts and ideas.
You know from the weather report that it will rain tomorrow; you did not make the decision on your own.
So you should use そうだ for hearsay.

e.g.
父(ちち)の話(はなし)では、この公園(こうえん)は昔(むかし)、小学校(しょうがっこう)だったそうだ。
According to my father, this park used to be an elementary school.

あのラーメン屋はおいしいらしい。いつも人が並んでいるし、何人かにおすすめされたし。
That ramen shop seems to be good. There are always people lined up, and several people have recommended it to me.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

電話番号は書かないでもいいですよ。

*でんわばんごうはかかないでもいいですよ。

[My correction]

電話番号は書かないでもいいですよ。
→電話番号は書かなくてもいいですよ。
You don't have to write your phone number.

◎〜なくてもいい "don't have to"
×〜ないでもいい

Verb nai-formい+くてもいい
書かな|い
書かな|くてもいい

e.g.
嫌(きら)いなら、食(た)べなくてもいいですよ。
You don't have to eat it if you don't like it.

明日(あした)は会社(かいしゃ)に来(こ)なくてもいいです。
You don't have to come to the office tomorrow.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

A: 明日、7時に学校に来てください。
B: わかります。

*A: あした、しちじにがっこうにきてください。

[My correction]

A: 明日、7時に学校に来てください。
B: わかります。
→B: わかりました。

A: Come to school tomorrow at 7:00.
B: I got it./ I understand.

You say わかりました when you understand the explanation or instruction that the other person has just given to you. You just learned something now.

If you say わかります in your sentence, it means "I already know that long ago."

You should say わかりました because you didn't know that you had to come to school tomorrow at 7:00 unless A told you.

e.g.
A: 先生(せんせい)、テストはいつですか。
B: 来週(らいしゅう)の月曜日(げつようび)ですよ。
A: そうですか、わかりました。
A: Sensei, when is the test?
B: Next Monday.
A: Okay, I got it.

A: この問題(もんだい)はわかりますか。
B: はい、わかります。
A: Do you understand this question?
B: Yes, I do.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

今日(きょう)から2月(がつ)です!
It is February from today.

Today I am going to share the homework correction quoted from my JLPT N3 course!
The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

日本で勉強するために、ビザを受けました。

*にほんでべんきょうするために、びざをうけました。

[My correction]

日本で勉強するために、ビザを受けました。
→日本で勉強するために、ビザをとりました。
I got a visa to study in Japan.

Use とる(取る) to mean "to get (a license/qualification etc.)" or "to obtain" something.

e.g.
運転免許(うんてんめんきょ)を取る
get a driver's license
予約(よやく)を取る
make an appointment

The meaning of 受ける is "accept", the essential idea of 受ける is "to receive something coming toward you with a determined attitude".

e.g.
授業(じゅぎょう)を受ける
take a class
手術(しゅじゅつ)を受ける
have a surgery

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

一週間で二回、ジムに行きます。

*いっしゅうかんでにかい、じむにいきます。

[My correction]

一週間で二回、ジムに行きます。
→一週間に二回、ジムに行きます。
I go to the gym twice a week.

に is used with frequency expressions such as per hour, per day, etc.

[Quantifier(time period)] に [how many]

e.g.
一日に10こ、漢字(かんじ)をおぼえます。
I learn 10 kanji a day.

一週間(いっしゅうかん)に25時間(じかん)働(はたら)きます。
I work 25 hours per week.

オリンピックは四年(よねん)に一回、行(おこな)われます。
The Olympics are held once every four years.

As you may know, に is the particle having the most various functions, and this is just one of them.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

日本に一番高い山は富士山です。

*にほんにいちばんたかいやまはふじさんです。

[My correction]

日本に一番高い山は富士山です。
→日本で一番高い山は富士山です。
The highest mountain in Japan is Mt.Fuji.

Particle で can be used to specify a range.
In your sentence, で marks 日本 as the range being discussed.

e.g.
このクラスで一人(ひとり)だけフランス語(ご)が話(はな)せます。
Only one student in this class speaks French.

英語(えいご)は世界中(せかいじゅう)で勉強(べんきょう)されています。
English is studied all over the world.

彼女(かのじょ)と結婚(けっこん)できて、人生(じんせい)で一番うれしい。
I am happier than ever in my life to be married to her.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

The student's sentence is not correct. Can you find the mistake?

[Student's sentence]

今忙しいので、あとに話しましょう。

*いまいそがしいので、あとにはなしましょう。

[My correction]

今忙しいので、あとに話しましょう。
→今忙しいので、あとで話しましょう。
I'm busy right now, so let's talk later.

Since あとに is much more specific than あとで, we cannot drop the first statement completely.

◎仕事(しごと)のあとに話す。
×あとに話す。
◎仕事のあとで話す。
◎あとで話す。

If you want to say "later", you should use あとで as a conjunction.

e.g.
おなかがいっぱいだから、あとでこのケーキを食(た)べよう。
I'm full, I'll have this cake later.

A:宿題(しゅくだい)をしなさい!
B:あとで!
A: Do your homework!
B: Later!

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

[Student's sentence]

私のへやはきれくないです。

*わたしのへやはきれくないです。

[My correction]

私のへやはきれくないです。
→私のへやはきれいじゃありません。
My room is not clean.

きれい(綺麗) is a na-adjective, an exception that just happen to end with い.
きれい's い ending is just part of the word, not the suffix of an i-adjective.

There are other exceptions.

子どものとき、やさいが嫌いでした。
(×子どものとき、やさいが嫌かったです。)
As a child, I hated vegetables.
嫌い(きらい) na-adjective

この歌手はゆうめいじゃありません。
(×この歌手はゆうめくないです。)
This singer is not famous.
有名(ゆうめい)na-adjective

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

[Student's sentence]

ケーキを食べすぎて、太るようになりました。

*けーきをたべすぎて、ふとるようになりました。

[My correction]

ケーキを食べすぎて、太るようになりました。
→ケーキを食べすぎて、太りました。
I ate too much cake and gained weight.

〜ようになる describes certain changes,
But originally 太る(gain weight, grow fat) is a verb that includes the meaning of change, there is no need to add ようになる.
Using both 太る and ようになる is redundant.

e.g.
ダイエットをして、10キロやせました。
(×ダイエットをして、10キロやせるようになりました。)
I went on a diet and lost 10 kg.
やせる:get thin, lose weight

毎日(まいにち)勉強(べんきょう)して、テストの点数(てんすう)が上がりました。
(×毎日勉強して、テストの点数が上がるようになりました。)
I studied every day and my test scores improved.
上がる:rise, improve, go up

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊

[Student's sentence]

妹は母にしかられました。そして、泣いているんです。

*いもうとはははにしかられました。そして、ないているんです。

[My correction]

妹は母にしかられました。そして、泣いているんです。
→妹は母にしかられました。それで、泣いているんです。
My younger sister got scolded by my mother. So she is crying.

そして just adds information from the same viewpoint.
On the other hand, それで is used to introduce or state the logical result of a previously mentioned statement.

You mean that your younger sister is crying as a result of being scolded by your mother, so use それで in this statement.

e.g.
日本に住んでいました。それで、日本語が話せるんです。
(にほんにすんでいました。それで、にほんごがはなせるんです。)
I lived in Japan. So I can speak Japanese.

昨日はお酒を飲みすぎた。それで、今日は頭がいたい。
(きのうはおさけをのみすぎた。それで、きょうはあたまがいたい。)
I drank too much alcohol yesterday. So today I have a headache.

朝から天気が悪かったです。そして、午後には雨が降り出しました。
(あさからてんきがわるかったです。そして、ごごにはあめがふりだしました。)
The weather was bad in the morning. And in the afternoon it started to rain.

公園をさんぽした。そして、家に帰ってシャワーをあびた。
(こうえんをさんぽした。そして、いえにかえってしゃわーをあびた。)
I took a walk in the park. Then I went home and took a shower.

I hope my explanation helps you. 😊
